The Red Devils Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
