The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
