During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
