Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Recent Detentions
Miami scored 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA game since guard Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
