Jude Bellingham Must Cut Out the Nonsense to Earn a Central Place In Manager Thomas Tuchel.
Should Bellingham aims to force his way once again into England’s top team, he would be wise to eliminate the nonsense. The way he reacted upon realizing that he was going up after an evening of mixed performance in the match against Albania fell short of expectations.
"I’d rather not blow it out of proportion but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the teammates who substitute on," commented the coach. "Substitutions happen and you have to accept it being a professional."
Bellingham has to learn. There was no call for a tantrum. Kane had recently scored to make the national team leading by two in an inconsequential qualifier, there were six minutes left and Bellingham, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for a foul on an opponent. It was not a questionable change. In fact it might have been reckless for Tuchel to not substitute him considering there was a chance he would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the competition by getting a another booking.
Shifting Focus Upon Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s frustration when he clocked that his replacement was ready for Morgan Rogers. He flung his arms in the air and while he accepted the coach's hand after making his way to the sideline it was clear that Tuchel was not impressed.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Rashford for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to nod home his second of the night, but his other actions was harmful to his cause. There was no chance protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
Bellingham, not included in the team last month, is being watched carefully since coming back to the fold recently. Essentially he was being assessed and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to being taken off as the national team rounded off a flawless qualification run by seeing off a spirited effort from the Albanian team.
The System and the Setup
It means it's unclear on if England perform optimally including Bellingham. What we saw was not definitive. Tuchel tried new things from Tuchel early on. Under him, England have gained England organization and direction over the past few matches, building with a holding player, a box-to-box player, an attacking midfielder and dedicated wide players, but the approach changed against Albania. Jarell Quansah was handed his international debut, the midfielder made his first start at this level and the positioning of the defender as a makeshift midfielder created a faint echo to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.
Inconsistent Display
His performance was inconsistent. He made a chance for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed overly eager to shine. Several rushed, misplaced passes. An unnecessary confrontation with a rival player at the beginning. England were ragged after halftime. One Albania chance came after he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when he was dispossessed from Broja and fouled Broja.
Depth Makes the Difference
In the end the bench quality proved crucial. Tuchel threw on Foden, who appeared more comfortable to the position that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and Saka. In time Saka whipped in a corner for Harry Kane to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that set pieces will be crucial next summer.
Relationship Not Broken
However, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was somewhat overlooked in the ridiculousness of the player change. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel came over from behind and guided the Real Madrid midfielder towards the travelling England fans. The bond between them is not broken. Tuchel hasn't decided to discard him at this stage. Yet whether the coach is prepared to offer him a starring role is still uncertain.
