A minimum of 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

The informal settlements near the city's international airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
