A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
